Summer Reading & BiLingual Encouragement

Cross-Linguistic Transfer

This summer we are helping those who wish to encourage or improve a child’s ability to be bilingual. Below are findings on Cross-Linguistic Transfer. It worked for me. I began my pursuit at 8 years old. Children find it interesting to read and compare and they quickly latch on to the words.

Here are Key Considerations in having a child read the same story, rhyme or poem in both languages with the idea of helping the child become bi-lingual.

Children notice that different words or sounds in each language can convey the same meaning or emotion.

Comparing poems, such as a Bengali lullaby versus an English one, allows children to see how cultural values differ and to connect with their heritage.

Children often move beyond simple recitation to interpreting the poetry, creating a “bilingual voice” by exploring, analyzing and rearranging the text in two languages.

Memorizing the same poem in two languages helps children recognize patterns in stress, rhythm, and rhyme in both languages.

While younger children might not explicitly voice comparisons , they are unconsciously internalizing new sounds. Older chidlren can more actively identify that different speech systems can carry the same Information.

Experts suggest this comparison is most effective when introduced naturally, rather than as a strict ”right or wrong” academic lesson.

This process in beneficial for the brain strengthening, working memory and cognitive control.

Reading the same story in two languages, truly aids in helping children to be bilingual.

I have 3 stories, printed in both English and Spanish. It’s good way to eliminate some screen time and encourage some summer reading, while assisting with the learning of either English or Spanish.
