Tourist Scams

When a cab posts a sign that the meter is broken. They are self-employed and not bonded, etc. They will most likely take you to where you are going for CASH only, however, should something happen, an accident, etc. they will likely dump you out and haul ass in the other direction. You’ll have no recourse, in the event of an emergency.

Cab driver tells you there is too much traffic due to (whatever) and suggests he take another route. This is a good way for them to stage a robbery at a stop light. Tell him no, take me back to the starting point.

Don’t allow a vendor to put a bracelet or anything on your body. Remove it quickly and walk away. They won’t chase you. Also do not let them put any herbs, flowers or sprays on you. It could make you drowsy/slow and available for pick-pockets a block away.

When a stranger says there is bird poop on your shirt and they try to help you wipe it off… Pickpockets! As does asking you to hold their baby for whatever reason.. beware that somebody is probably behind you.

If a stranger asks you to watch their bag, don’t do it. A ‘phony’ security or police officer may approach and find drugs in the bag. Then they’ll ask for a cash bribe not to report you AND they’ll take the drugs with them.

Purchasing discounted tickets on the street from an unidentified person with no credentials for said event or exhibit. Don’t do it.

Refuse to allow a local to help you with an ATM. Find a bank and go inside.

The "Friendship" Bracelet: A vendor approaches and aggressively asks if you'll help with a "demonstration." The vendor proceeds to make a friendship bracelet right on your arm, then asks you to pay a premium for it. Since you can't easily take it off on the spot, you feel obliged to pay up. (These sorts of distractions can also function as a smokescreen for theft — an accomplice is picking your pocket as you try to wriggle away from the pushy vendor.)

The US Department of State (.gov) will list the update latest scams happening for your destination. Please read prior to departure.
