The Smart Packing Lady

Travel with Healthcare

To protect its’ healthcare system and ensure travelers aren't left stranded with large medical bills, Spain now expects visitors to show proof of private travel insurance with adequate medical coverage. Failure to do so could cost you up to €6,000 in fines ($7,034.16 USD as of this writing) — or worse, you could be denied entry altogether. This was made official Jul 15, 2025. Spain has become proactive in its’ own self preservation in that they are not going to be stuck with debt in their medical facilities or allow their medical personnel to come up short in their the paychecks, made possible by visitors. Having medical insurance at home doesn’t mean you will be convered elsewhere, there must be a special addendum or policy. Travel with proof that you are covered while internationally traveling. And, be sure your insurance is not just for catastrophic problems while traveling because a UTI, a broken toe, a sore throat, diarrhea, etc. is not going to be considered catastrophic.
